LUXETIGERS Foodie: Avalon Grille

1930s Redux by Steve Paulovich

As a resort destination, Catalina Island has a wide variety of restaurants ranging from casual to fine dining. Standing apart from the crowd, The Avalon Grille strikes a perfect balance of understated elegance and fine dining. Located on the Avalon Bay waterfront, with its open floor plan and high, exposed beam ceilings, the restaurant has a comfortable, relaxed, open-air ambiance. Real wicker chairs and leather benches with summery floral prints harkens back to the 1930s and the island's heyday as a playground for Hollywood stars and the wealthy.

The attention to detail given to the restaurant during its recent renovation is remarkable. Solid dark wood tables, mahogany flooring, leather placemats, heavy silver utensils and delightful artwork are evidence that no expense was spared in creating the sophisticated atmosphere. But the focus is not on these amenities, it is squarely on relaxed enjoyment, outstanding service and classic American comfort food with a twist.
