Further along the harbor's deep blue water stands the distinctive and historic Catalina Island Casino. The building was named before the term became synonymous with gambling, referencing instead the original Italian meaning of the word, "a gathering place." Its lower level houses an 1154-seat theater with spectacular art deco murals and gold and silver leaf stars on the soaring ceiling. The acoustics are so remarkable that theater patrons cannot hear the band playing or the 6,000 dancers in the Casino's spectacular round ballroom above. Guided tours, including an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour are conducted daily.
