Santa Catalina Island has been a popular getaway destination for generations since the late nineteenth century. Located off the coast of Long Beach, California, the trip takes about an hour from the harbor with dolphins often playfully swimming alongside the Catalina Express Ferry beckoning visitors to the island. Back in the 1930s during its heyday, the island was frequented by Hollywood actors such as Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe and dozens of movies have been shot in the area. Arriving at Avalon, the island's main city, the relaxed lifestyle is immediately apparent. There are very few cars due to the ten-year waiting list available only to local residents. Consequently, golf carts and bicycles are the main modes of transportation but most people choose to leisurely walk around. |
